The Rougher Regiment
As the premier athletic performing ensemble of Muskogee Bands, the Rougher Regiment represents the pinnacle of discipline, dedication, and musical excellence. Blending the artistry of music with the athleticism of precision marching, the Rougher Regiment exemplifies the strength, spirit, and unity that define our program.
The ensemble performs at a variety of high-profile events, including football games, school functions, and community parades, while also competing at the highest levels of marching performance. The Rougher Regiment proudly represents Muskogee Public Schools in Bands of America (BOA), Oklahoma Bandmasters Association (OBA), and Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association (OSSAA) events. These competitions provide students with valuable opportunities to showcase their talents, receive expert adjudication, and engage with top-tier programs from across the state and nation.
Membership in the Rougher Regiment demands a strong commitment to excellence. Students participate in rigorous rehearsals, physical conditioning, and ongoing performance preparation throughout the season. More than just a marching band, the Rougher Regiment is a team that fosters leadership, perseverance, and pride—on and off the field.
Jazz Ensembles
Muskogee Bands is proud to offer a vibrant and diverse jazz program that provides students with enriching opportunities for musical growth, creativity, and performance. Our jazz ensembles cultivate a deep appreciation for American music traditions while helping students develop advanced musicianship, improvisational skills, and ensemble collaboration.
At the high school level, the Muskogee High School Jazz Orchestra serves as our premier jazz ensemble. This advanced group performs a wide range of styles—from swing and bebop to funk and Latin jazz—and represents Muskogee Bands at regional festivals, community events, and school functions. Students in the Jazz Orchestra are held to high musical standards and often pursue additional opportunities in all-region and all-state jazz programs.
For our younger musicians, the 8th and 9th Grade Jazz Collectives provide an essential foundation in jazz technique and ensemble performance. These ensembles are designed to introduce students to key concepts such as improvisation, jazz theory, and stylistic interpretation in a collaborative and supportive environment. They serve as important stepping stones to our high school jazz opportunities.
At the middle school level, the Rock Band engages students through contemporary genres, blending elements of jazz, blues, rock, and pop. This ensemble encourages creativity, performance confidence, and musical exploration, while fostering early enthusiasm for jazz-related styles. Additionally, the Rock Band travels across the district for recruitment events.
Concert Ensembles
The concert ensembles at Muskogee High School are the foundation of our instrumental music program, emphasizing musicianship, technical excellence, and artistic expression. Through rigorous rehearsal and diverse repertoire, students develop the skills necessary to perform at the highest levels while deepening their understanding and appreciation of the wind band tradition.
The Muskogee High School Wind Ensemble is our premier concert ensemble, composed of the program’s most advanced musicians. Admission is based on audition, and students are expected to demonstrate a high level of technical proficiency, musical maturity, and commitment. The Wind Ensemble performs advanced concert literature spanning classical, contemporary, and culturally diverse works, and represents Muskogee Bands at festivals, adjudicated events, and community concerts. The ensemble performs quality literature appropriate for its level and participates in school concerts and district and state assessments through the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association (OSSAA).
The Muskogee High School Symphonic Band serves as a core ensemble that provides a strong, comprehensive musical experience for developing high school musicians. With a focus on ensemble fundamentals, tone production, intonation, and music literacy, the Symphonic Band offers students the opportunity to grow as performers in a supportive and educational environment.
8th Grade Band
The 8th Grade Band at Muskogee serves as a vital bridge between foundational music education and the advanced performance opportunities available at the high school level. This ensemble focuses on developing essential skills in tone production, technique, music literacy, and ensemble performance, while also fostering discipline, teamwork, and personal responsibility.
Students in the 8th Grade Band continue to build on the fundamentals established in earlier years, while being introduced to more challenging repertoire and ensemble expectations. The ensemble performs at school concerts, community events, and may participate in local and district-level assessments and festivals.
Beyond musicianship, the 8th Grade Band plays a key role in preparing students for success in the broader Muskogee Bands program, including participation in marching band, jazz ensembles, and high school concert groups. It is a formative experience where students grow as both musicians and individuals, gaining the confidence and skills needed to thrive in future musical endeavors.
6th & 7th Grade Bands
We firmly believe that the success of our high school ensembles begins with a strong start in the early years of music education. Without the fundamental skills, discipline, and musical understanding developed in these formative stages, the achievements of our upper-level groups would not be possible.
The 6th Grade Band serves as the entry point for all beginning band students. With no prior experience required, students are introduced to the basics of instrumental music through guided instruction in tone production, music literacy, rhythm, and ensemble rehearsal skills. Directors work closely with students to ensure proper technique and foster a love for music from the very first note. The ensemble performs at least one public concert, giving students their first opportunity to showcase their progress.
The 7th Grade Band continues this developmental journey, expanding on the foundational skills established in sixth grade. Students begin to tackle more challenging repertoire and are expected to demonstrate increasing musical independence, ensemble awareness, and expressive performance. This ensemble performs regularly and may participate in school concerts, community events, and regional festivals.
Colorguard
The Muskogee Colorguard program is a vital and dynamic component of Muskogee Bands, offering daily instruction and performance opportunities for students in grades 6–12. With a curriculum that integrates dance, equipment technique (flag, rifle, sabre), and expressive performance, the program develops confident, skilled performers while promoting discipline, teamwork, and creativity.
Beginning in middle school, students receive daily instruction that introduces them to the fundamentals of movement, musical interpretation, and equipment work. These foundational experiences prepare students for advanced performance opportunities in high school and build a strong pipeline of talent for the program.
At the high school level, all colorguard members perform as part of the Rougher Regiment, contributing to the ensemble’s award-winning visual program during the fall marching season. In the spring semester, students audition for placement in either the Varsity Colorguard or Junior Varsity Colorguard, which focus on the competitive winter guard season.
These winter ensembles represent Muskogee at Winter Guard International (WGI) and Winter Guard & Percussion of Oklahoma (WGPO) events, where students perform choreographed routines set to music in a theatrical indoor setting. Through these competitions, students refine their performance abilities, build resilience, and gain valuable experience on regional and national stages.
Percussion Ensembles
The Muskogee Percussion program is a cornerstone of Muskogee Bands, offering a vertically aligned, performance-based curriculum for students in grades 8–12. With a focus on musical excellence, technical mastery, and ensemble collaboration, the program provides students with a broad and dynamic percussion education that spans concert, marching, and chamber disciplines.
Students participate in dedicated Percussion Ensembles from 8th through 12th grade, where they study a range of techniques including concert percussion, mallet keyboard performance, world percussion, and small ensemble playing. These ensembles perform in the spring and are regularly featured in campus concerts and festivals, including participation in events hosted by the Oklahoma Percussive Arts Society (OKPAS).
In the fall, high school percussionists are an integral part of the Rougher Regiment, contributing to the ensemble’s powerful sound. In the spring, many students audition for Muskogee Indoor Percussion. This competitive ensemble performs high-energy, theatrical productions and competes in the Winter Guard & Percussion of Oklahoma (WGPO) circuit. Muskogee Indoor Percussion has earned state-wide recognition for its excellence, most recently being named the 2024 WGPO Scholastic Marching B State Champions and 2025 Bronze Medalists in the Scholastic Marching A Class.
